Sandusky Public Library
The Sandusky Public Library is a Grand Carnegie structure that has been featured in several books regarding Carnegie Libraries. With such a storied past, expansion and renovations had to be approached with care.
Tec Inc. has been involved in several remodelings, including what was at the time an exceptional relighting of the main reference room, for the library prior to the major expansion project.
The project presented here is a major renovation and expansion of the existing library building. Several adjacent properties were purchased to facilitate this expansion, resulting in substantial modifications to the existing utilities.
The adjacent county jail building will house staff/support and community functions. A new addition connects this structure to the existing expanded library building. Virtually all areas of the library will benefit from increased space allocation and improved mechanical and electrical utilities.
The design program included the complete upgrade and expansion of the technology infrastructure. New data closets to house patch panels and hubs, as well as voice cabling brings the library up to date with the latest in technology. Wireless access capability is provided throughout the building.
The mechanical systems design was approached with care to provide the appropriate balance between environmental comfort, energy efficiency and cost. The final design has operated through a heating and cooling season comfortably and efficiently, while maintaining maximum ceiling heights for the large open areas with the existing building.
The lighting design challenge was to unify the several independent structures and provide appropriate illumination levels. Consistent application of high efficiency linear fluorescent lamps as well as compact fluorescent lamp technologies allows excellent color rendition, and superior energy efficiency.
